The Coming Revolution: The American Middle Class versus Saul Alinsky’s Radical Disciples

There has been only one true American Revolution. But there are strong political forces that consider the principles of our founding old and out dated. They consider themselves modern American Revolutionaries. They look at America and the middle class as war mongering, racist, and in need of a radical transformation by an all powerful Big Government of wise philosopher kings and the minions of supporters and foot soldiers from community organizations. They are in an undeclared war against the status quo and the American middle class.

America has become a stable civil society over the last two hundred years, but that does not mean that our fundamental individual rights and freedoms are secure. They are not. With the recent election of Barak Obama it is fair to say that these radical forces are winning the battle of ideas. This ideological war has been going on for over a century, perhaps since the mid 19th Century with the ideas of Karl Marx, but we can mark our present battle beginning in earnest with the 1971 publication of a small book by Saul Alinsky (1909-1972) Rules for Radicals. Alinksy is also known as the father of community organizers. His influence on our new president is well documented.

Although Barack Obama and the other community organizers may not openly admit it for political reasons, they consider themselves not only Radicals but also societal revolutionaries. Alinksy and his Radical followers, however, are better described as counter revolutionaries fighting against the status quo and the resultant society created by our original American Revolution. They are at war with our founding principles and it is time that Americans wake up to this fact.

It is also fair to say that with the ascent of Barack Obama to the Presidency, Saul Alinsky and his radical counter revolutionary movement has won a significant battle for the soul of America. Not to be alarmist, but America is in jeopardy of becoming a footnote in history if she does not win this war. If America loses this war she will invariably become another failed experiment in implementing a free and open democratic republic in a world of tyrannical regimes and oppressive governments. And it is shocking that this all happened in less than two decades since the fall of the Communist Soviet Union.

Alinsky was a brilliant tactician and the power of his ideas has been proven by the election of his greatest disciple Barack Obama to the highest office in the land. For those of us who have been awakened by the speed in which Obama and his followers have succeeded in transforming America, the part that Saul Alinsky has played in this drama is quite amazing. Alinsky grew up in Chicago and is hailed as the father of community organizers and Obama does not hide his pride in his Chicago community organizing past. In fact it is fair to compare Lenin’s relationship to Marx with Obama and Alinsky. Conservatives can vilify Marx and Alinsky but they would be better served to try to understand these brilliant men rather than dismissing them and the motivation of the politicians who use their ideas to seek power.

Although it may not be immediately apparent, America is now in real jeopardy of a full fledged civil war. At the present we have had a mostly quiet transition to radical socialism, because it has been done under the cover of a complicit press and government education monopoly, but as more Americans wake up to the radical transformative policies of Obama, it may not stay that way. This is especially true if Obama is successful in pushing through social and economic policies that are aimed at destroying the fundamental principles of this country and the wealth and standard of living of the vast American middle class.

It is my sincerest hope that Obama is slowed in his rush to take over the major instrumentalities of American government, because if he is successful the inevitable result will be armed conflict. Unlike other countries that have been lulled into a takeover by the tyrants who use lies of a socialist utopia with little or no resulting armed revolt, America’s armed citizens are not defenseless against tyrants. Also there may be at least a third or more of the population willing to rise up in rebellion if that is the only option left open to them. This portends a less than peaceful response if radical forces are successful in their coup. Also, there may come a point where many in the military have to choose between blind loyalty to a radical counter culture commander in chief or fighting with the new American Revolutionaries. It is my deepest wish that it does not come to that, but one would have to be in total denial to think that all Americans will simply roll over once they understand what is happening to them.

In essence we are continuing the Revolution of our founding. We are the descendants of freedom loving Revolutionaries and we are now fighting the new tyrannical policies of radicals who are well on their way to taking over our country. In 1776, this revolution was forced on us by a capricious Monarch who levied unbearable taxation and other intolerable policies which inevitably led to the original Boston Tea Party – a rebellion that told the tyrannical King George that we would not stand for taxation without representation. Today the radicals and their lackeys in the media dismiss our tea party rebellion and protests, but they have not seen anything yet. They are waking up the sleeping giant and there will not be a peaceful resolution unless they back off. It is my sincerest hope that our followers will be able to keep our protests peaceful, but it is not altogether clear that this conflict will always stay that way. Freedom loving people – descendants of our brave Revolutionary founders know that freedom is worth fighting and dying for. Let us hope that we can take back our country without a second bloody civil war or revolution.

So when all is said and done the American Patriot may once again be forced to fight a revolution that has morphed from a fight against an oppressive Monarchy in 1776 to a struggle against radical socialist despotism in 2009. Although it can be said the country has been moving slowly toward socialism for almost a century, there always seemed to be a spirit and will in the American people to keep these tyrannical forces from taking over. But with ascendancy of Barack Hussein Obama to the Presidency, an activist judiciary, sycophantic press and a complicit legislative branch, the forces of radical socialism are moving at warp speed to once and for all destroy the middle class and the capitalist engine that has created our extraordinary wealth and power and substitute the failed ideology that has been a primary tool of tyrants –the false utopia of big government socialism.

Whether you want to call yourself a Patriot or true American Revolutionary to the Counter Revolution of the Radical socialists – the goal is the same: return the instrumentalities of government back to We the People and fight the forces of darkness and oppression; To build in firewalls and new mechanisms that will prevent the radicals from taking over our great birthright; To make sure that government once again remembers that they work for us – not the other way around.

So who are we fighting? Many of the elitists, advisors and surrogates surrounding Obama want to destroy the freedoms and rule of law given to America and the world by our original revolution and substitute their radical tyrannical utopian vision instead. The leaders of this movement like Alinsky himself are essentially quasi-gangster tacticians or counter culture revolutionaries with Law Degrees and PhDs. Ayers is nothing more than a retired terrorist with a PhD. Wright is essentially an anti-American, Anti-Semite preaching a religion of hate and justifying his warped world view by claiming victimhood – all the while hiding behind the cross of Christ. These are the voices that have had and still have great influence over Obama. And of course Alinsky’s community organizers and his rules for radicals are and have been Obama’s greatest influence.

Alinsky’s minions tell us that his rules are derived from many successful campaigns where he helped poor people fighting power and privilege. The fact that Alinsky trained with Al Capone’s gang to learn how to execute these campaigns somehow gets lost in the praise. For Alinsky, organizing is the process of highlighting what is wrong and convincing, or should we say, intimidating people until they can actually do something about it. According to Alinsky, the organizer must first overcome suspicion and establish credibility. Next the organizer must begin the task of agitating and searching out controversy. Alinsky might say, The first step in community organization is community disorganization. The recent agitating efforts started out with the attack on public figures like Bush 2, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and other prominent targets of opposition who pose the most threat to their movement. Now with the attempted healthcare takeover, they are literally attacking average middle class Americans as well. This is a major miscalculation. In the 2010 and 2012 election cycles, the radicals and their supporters will be voted out of office, unless of course they are able to somehow rig the elections. Heaven help us if they are successful in interfering with the democratic process in the coming elections for there will be hell to pay if that happens.

The Right has been a miserable failure at communications. All Marxist "progress" is a function of propaganda. What we need is an additional broadcast network for normalizing American values. If we do nothing about the Marxists controlling the infrastructure of the information war, the war is already over. See here: http://www.rightalk.com

Speaking treason, very nice.

The left controls all media - like Fox News, talk radio -- uh huh.

And the 'attack' on the middle-class, which is trying to provide health care for the millions who don't have any - sure.

Go on dreaming your sad little fascist dreams.

Alan W. Liss said...

Fox News is moderate and only sounds right wing to the brainwashed masses who can't think for themselves. Jerry Rivers and many others on Fox are left wing. Find one conservative on MSNBC. Again, the reason Fox dominates cable news is because the rest of cable news is far left propaganda without a hint of objectivity.

Talk radio is dominated by conservatives, but that is primarily due to the fact that all the other media outlets are controlled by the far left. Despite the brainwashing from the majority of the media outlets, the government education monopoly, and hollyweird, polls indicate that America is nonetheless populated with about twice the number of self identifying conservatives as liberals.

The socialists have a bull's eye on talk radio and there will definitely be hell to pay if they are successful silencing it using either the Orwellian "Fairness Doctrine" or the Local Minority ownership angle.

I consider the policies of Obama and his socialist radical friends to be antithetical if not treasonous to our founding principles of individual freedom, property rights, and divided government.

Obama's goals for health care are transparent to any thinking American: provide free health care to 10-20 million illegal immigrants to buy their votes - and this will inevitably mean rationing for "grandma". They don't have to pull the plug on "grandma" - when big government controls health care they merely have the power to say no for a life saving procedure when she needs one. And - by the way - who the hell is going to pay for this after the unheard of debt that Obama has left us?

I also think anonymous is a synonym for gutless.

America's troubles began when they closed the mental institutions. People who would formerly have been locked up in padded rooms instead started inhabiting blogs like this, spewing their poisonous venom with abandon. What other kinds of paranoid gobbledygook fill what remains of that mind of yours?

Alan W. Liss said...

Jeff Morris,

I appreciate the fact that unlike Mr. Anonymous you are not a gutless coward, merely an imbecilic fool. However, like most on the far left, you come to the argument with emotion instead of facts.

You can't refute one thing I said. You're idea of debate is ridicule or to call names.

Two can play that game. As the bard might respond: Clean thine eyes and ears thou cankerous cod-sniffing foot-licker, motley-minded - Thou lump of foul deformity - and to quote Henry IV - Thou clay-brained guts, thou knotty-pated fool, thou whoreson obscene greasy tallow-catch!

Have a nice day!

This rant reminds me of the hate mongering of the 60s and 70s. I fail to understand how one man could fool the House, Congress, local representatives, and the Supreme Court. Like Obama or not, the only thing this over-the-top discourse can bring is division and encourage the lunatic fringe that it might be ok to turn to violence.

Barry Goldwater's slogan was, "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice." Unfortunately, he was wrong.

The sad news is that extremism is the enemy of liberty. always. Extremism assumes that one side has the right to define the other side.

Creating mythical enemies, projecting values onto others, guessing into other peoples motivations just confuses us.

It is no longer about the "left" and the "right", it is about using data to solve problems vs fear of all change.

Fear and anger are the real enemies. They make us all stupid, they allow us to ignore data, they justify the use of torture, they separate brothers, they separate families, they feed on themselves and each other.

More than 2000 years ago, a Greek philosopher -- Euclid said, "Those whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad."

Alan W. Liss said...

Steve,

The full quote from Goldwater:

“Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice – Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue” --

I'm sure there were many good Germans and Russians preaching moderation - right before they were put in chains.

Since you like quotes, I like this one from Lincoln: "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Wow, you should try some some history. I am amazed that you conservatives keep throwing stones at a man who has been dead since the early 70's. You don't have the first idea what the broad-based organization model is about. Please stop cross-posting on LinkedIn. No one comments because the writing is poor and shrill and everyone is too embarrassed to say anything.

Alan W. Liss said...

To "Saul Alinsky said" - another brave idiot too timid to leave his name or state facts. Karl Marx has been dead for 125 years - so your point about Alinsky being dead since the 1970s is what - ideas die with the man?

The problem is that the article isn't designed to create dialogue, it's designed to create fear. The language is designed to widen the differences rather than understand them. The language in this article, starting with the headline is designed to demonize things that actually work pretty well.

Turns out my neighborhood got organized about 30 years ago by a bunch of "community organizers" and we created an association that has been organizing ever since. We have such frightening things as pre-school co-ops, community choirs, yoga classes. It also organizes a yearly garage sale Saturday.

When I compare my experence and the experience of all the people I know, and the actual experiences of people who wrote their down, none of it fits the description of "radical disciple" None of us ever talked about the "Government" being... actually we didn't talk about it at all. We were way too busy creating something useful.

I don't know if Fox is conservative or liberal or moderate. I do know they routinely use fear words to characterize those they disagree with. They routinely encourage shouting at town hall meetings. Fear words kill discussion. kill understanding. short circuit real solutions. They make it easy to hate something before that thing is understood.

We need to talk with each other, yelling isn't helpful.

Alan W. Liss said...

Steve,

I am referring to a government take over of your life. The government already has a monopoly on education and a near monopoly on news, so it is quite understandable that you don't see things the way I do. The economy, with the take over of the financial and auto industry, the attempted take over of the Energy sector with cap and trade, the attempted take over of 1/6 of the economy in the health care sector has finally awakened the masses. You must excuse them if they are a bit too shrill for your taste - but many of them are quite fearful with or without anything I write.

My article is not really focusing on your benign community organizations. All of these organizations you mention are great if they are formed by individuals and communities without government intervention.

The fundamental problem is that while you and your happy, moderate community are doing "yoga" and singing in "community choirs" - Obama, backed by the biased majority of media outlets, and his "brown shirts" groups like Acorn are out attempting to stifle debate.

The town hall meetings have been quite civil considering how condescending and tone deaf our representatives have been to the people who ask questions. The fact that someone did not throw a tomato at the Texas congresswoman talking on the cell phone during a question at a town meeting is amazing to me.

I am still waiting for one of you on the left to actually make a factual point to refute what I have said.

Here's a question on a point of fact that refutes what you wrote (in comments):

Obama's goals for health care are transparent to any thinking American: provide free health care to 10-20 million illegal immigrants to buy their votes

How do illegal immigrants vote?

MaryAnn Johanson said...

Alan:

Do you advocate getting rid of the government monopoly on highway maintenance, policing, fire-fighting, and the military?

Do you advocate doing away with government-run programs like Medicare/Medicaid and the VA?

Do you believe that any member of Congress and any Senator who opposes a single-payer system for paying for health care in the U.S. should renounce their own government-run health care?

If not, why not?

Just curious...

The only thing that was left out of your piece is the relationship and takeover of the American labor movement by the followers of Alinsky--namely John Sweeney and Andy Stern. Since their take over (and subsequent rift), the vast majority of today's union bosses have become supporters in Alinky tactics as well.

And, by the way, Dienekes died in 480 BC, but his ideals live on: Freedom shall over come tyranny.

Alan W. Liss said...

Hi Maryann!

Thanks for asking some good questions. Illegals will vote - and vote for Dems and Obama once he pushes through an Amnesty bill - which is the next step. This will effectively give us a one party system that will negate the roughly even Dem-Rep division we now have. Please understand I'm not a huge fan of the Repubics - but at least they appear to be for socialism lite - and give lip service to traditional American values and our founding principles.

Now regarding the second part about first responders being necessarily controlled by government, I refer to our US Constitution; one of the only things that Government was "originally" really mandated to do which is: Article I, sec 8 - provide for the common defense;regulate commerce;raise and support armies;and prevent States from engaging in International treaties. The neglected Tenth Amendment - powers not granted to the United States were reserved to the States or to the people. I am humbled by the sacrifice and service of all of our first responders, whether police, firemen, etc. - and I salute them and of course, see the necessity for them to be government controlled on local, state and national levels.

I take a Federalist position on Highway - maintenance: Each state should fund it's own highways - but there should of course be national signs and standards. I refer to the Constitution and the Federalist Papers as a guide for the necessity of National control of military.

Actually, if it were realistically possible to "re-do" Medicare, Medicaid and other gov't mandated programs like social security - that would be my first choice - but the existing programs may be too entrenched to do anything other than trying to creatively find ways to save them and find a way to keep them solvent. ccording to SUMMARY OF THE 2009 ANNUAL REPORTS-Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees: The projected date of HI (Hospital Insurance) Trust Fund exhaustion is 2017.

I would also like to see a more efficient - public-private system to improve the VA Hospitals. All government run health care systems have a poor track record.

To me the analogy is: If you need to paint and upgrade a room in your house - do you bulldoze the entire house and start over? I firmly believe there are at least a hundred things that we can think of to improve the health care system without "bull dozing the entire system" - which really means - improving the cost structure and making sure that as many "citizens" are serviced by the system as possible - and providing a safety net for the truly needy.

Illegal immigrants today are putting a huge strain on our health care system by the fact that no hospital emergency room will turn them away - whether it be for a serious illness or hangnail. I believe in being creative and providing safety nets for the truly needy citizens - about 10-12 million. Most of those so called 47 million in need of health care - are either in between jobs for a few months, make good wages and choose not to pay for health care - and the rest are illegals. We should enforce the laws and our borders and most illegals would self deport - but that is a subject that will require at a book or two to discuss adequately, so I'll leave it at that.

For your last question - I advocate the passing of the XXVIII amendment - Congressional Term Limits. If every single member of congress were replaced tomorrow the country would be better off. Of course, these weasels should have to not only renounce their own rolls royce health care policies if they vote against single payer - they should all be required to choose from any policy that they mandate for us. This act alone would kill a single payer bill.

Dear all social engineers,

Attempts at engineering political solutions to complex problems always fails because the myopic thinking that encapsulates the thinking of politicians always discounts unexpected consequences of policy. I am an environmental scientist. I see examples everyday of political solutions to social and scientific issues. It is absolutely impossible for a government policy to encompass solutions to any problem.

Government policies are not fluid and are designed to solve a particular set of problems at one instant for a particular solution. See New Orleans, HUD, dept of education, EPA, Chesapeake Bay program, social security administration, war powers act, Medicare/Medicaid, welfare, unemployment, CARS, Civil Rights Act, U.S. Constitution, Bill of rights, etc. Complex problems can not be solved by a group of 536 self-serving individuals. For every solution (policy), a new set of problems is introduced. The conditions and parameters that define a problem at one point change and define a new problem which may be helped or hindered by policy.

Free markets are efficient over time at solving complex problems. The U.S. has never had a free market economy. From the founding to the emancipation proclamation, labor markets were skewed by the slavery debacle. From emancipation through the first major depression (1890’s), the markets were skewed by the rebuilding and redistribution of wealth in the South (I am not defending the south just stating what happened). Between depressions we had rapid expansion due to developing technologies (oil, rail, steel, WW1, ship building, steam, cars, electricity, roads, construction, immigration). From this time the government has controlled ever increasing percentages of GDP.

The argument against markets is the market does not take social considerations into determining efficiency. However, the market will determine stable equilibrium points. The market will always have winners and losers, but a true market economy will allow all to participate. Social policy picks winners and losers based on arbitrary parameters, establishing unstable equilibrium points. Unstable equilibriums will lead to social instability and inequity over time. A permanent social underclass was established by housing projects in urban industrial areas while establishing trade policies moving blue collar production jobs out of urban industrial areas concentrating unskilled, uneducated poor people into government controlled ‘cages’ without changing educational and technical training policies is an example of what happens when ‘The Great Society’ was established by a bunch of narrow minded liberals. The road to hell was paved with good intentions. The intentions of ‘The great Society’ were good, but the outcome has been to establish a prison of despair for the urban poor.

The government can not solve great social problems. The problem with healthcare is healthcare. HMO’s and other HMO like institutions were established in the 1970’s in California to save money and increase efficiencies. Preventive medicine, pre-screening, managed care, ability to negotiate with manufacturers will lead to massive savings, blah, blah, blah, hope, change, etc. Costs have skyrocketed and coverage has become expensive and unattainable for many. When most people had major medical with reasonable deductibles, out of pocket maximums for the year, and 80/20 indemnity health care was accusable, affordable and efficient. So, government screwed up healthcare and now to fix healthcare they are going to emulate a system that other countries, Canada & U.K., have said are unsustainable and broken. Makes a whole lot of sense.

People are afraid of what you have to say, but I agree. Can they not just examine the odds that this is true or something they should consider? Most of us just want to have a free, peaceful, and just society. Some people think what you have to say is just still angry propaganda against Obama. However, with Obama's recent actions, I think every person in this country has to examine what they believe and who is or who is not on the right side whether you have called youself in the past a liberal or conservative.
America has been sleeping too long, and we have to be informed and wake up and be more involved in our decisions-lest someone (like Obama) make our decisions for us.

In Defense Of Capitalism

From Ayn Rand: "No man has the right to seek values from others by means of physical force--i.e., no man or group has the right to initiate the use of physical force against others. Men have the right to use force only in self-defense and only against those who initiate its use. Men must deal with one another as traders, giving value for value, by free, mutual consent to mutual benefit. The only social system that bars physical force from human relationships is laissez-faire capitalism.

Capitalism is a system based on the recognition of individual rights, including property right, in which the only function of the government is to protect individual rights, i.e., to protect men from those who initiate the use of physical force. I reject any form of fascism or socialism. I also reject any form of a mixed economy that regulates and redistributes wealth."

I do not imagine that every person who joins or reads The Political Coffeehouse would agree with my exact philosophy. But I do believe that we should join together to in order to further goals that we can agree on. The implementation of Marxist policies in the United States must be stopped. J. Michael Warner
