Going to the Spokane County Jail to visit an inmate is an interesting experience. This jail does not offer contact visits meaning you will not be able to actually touch the inmate (you are separated by a glass wall and must speak to them through a telephone). What you have seen on TV regarding conjugal visits, just so you know, is either completely made up or at least does not exist at this jail. Asking other people there to see their inmates about it only provoked laughing and telling me to stop watching CSI. The jail is pretty close to downtown.

If you know somebody in the Spartanburg County Jail you probably want to know how to communicate with them. Inmates can use phones but the hours they have available for phones will vary depending on their classification. In the trustee dorms, for instance, you will probably have more access to phones than general population.
You should be given two times per day to get out of your cell and make phone calls. These calls are collect and not cheap so if you know somebody in there be prepared for a large phone bill. Be sure to set expectations on how often the inmate can contact you so they don’t run the bill up too high.

I had a brother go to jail a few months ago and I was surprised that on letters he sent me there was a stamp from the jail saying that he is an “inmate.” I thought inmates were only people in prison (not a guy being held in county jail on a DUI), but apparently anybody who is in county custody is considered an inmate. Usually those held in prisons are referred to as prisoners (though they are also technically considered inmates). I wonder how this will affect him later on (like, will potential employers see that he was once an inmate?).

My mom called me last night to ask me to come to dinner this coming weekend. It turns out mys sister was going to be in the area and she wanted the family to get together. one of the things we then talked about was the news. At one point she mentioned a news item she had found while looking through some Drudge Report Archives. After we hung up the phone with one another I went online to find the same news report.
