I felt terrible for being involved in bringing my mother so much pain, but it was better that we found out when we did. We tried using a Free Credit Lookup for her, and it turned out that my father had been opening a lot of accounts that were showing up on her report and wrecking her credit. We might never have had any idea it was happening if we had not taken the time to file a request for a look.
